Cleaning in your student housing

As long as you are a tenant with us, you are responsible for your student housing and its condition. That’s why it’s important that you take care of it properly and clean it regularly and thoroughly. Here’s some information and advice to help you avoid unnecessary damage as much as possible.

Remember that it’s a requirement for you as a tenant to have home insurance for your student housing. In case of negligence and damage, the tenant may be liable for compensation, which can involve large amounts if they don’t have home insurance.

Floors

Floors and floor mats should be well maintained. Most materials can be cleaned with warm water and a mild cleaning agent (soap or dish soap). Linoleum mats should be wiped with a well-wrung cloth – use only mild cleaning agents, such as dish soap or soap. Almost all floors including parquet are gently cleaned with a slightly damp cloth or mop. Linoleum floors are also freshened up with polish if they are worn.

Kitchen

Cabinets and woodwork are wiped with a damp cloth and mild cleaning agent. Clean the stove, oven, and fan regularly. Clean the fan filter by placing it in the sink and filling with warm water and soap. Let it dry and put it back in the clean-dried fan. A clean fan filter reduces dirt buildup in the rest of the kitchen.

Clean the oven using oven cleaner – follow the instructions on the bottle. Always clean oven trays after use. Tip: Place foil on the bottom of the oven and baking paper on the oven tray to make it easier to keep the oven clean. Use pots with flat bottoms – poor pots and frying pans can cause stove plates to crack, or stove tops to become scratched and burned. The tenant may be liable for payment for replacing plates or stove tops. The stove gives more heat if plates or tops are kept clean. Don’t forget to clean behind and beside the stove regularly.

Wipe out the refrigerator and freezer regularly. When you defrost the freezer, don’t hack away the ice. Let the ice melt, for example by placing a bowl of warm (not boiling) water inside. Regular defrosting provides a more even temperature and lower energy consumption, which also results in less wear on the appliances.

Remember that waste from the kitchen counter quickly becomes grease in the drain. Food scraps and other waste easily get stuck, which is why it’s important not to throw waste in the drains. In places where there is lime in the water, such as Kristianstad, it’s especially important to make sure you dry up thoroughly and clean away all lime. If you let the lime take hold, it can later become very difficult to remove and in some extreme cases impossible. If you clean regularly, you shouldn’t have any problems removing the lime.

Remember to always wipe up water that may have ended up on doors, drawers, or other surfaces when you do dishes. It’s important to wipe up the water to avoid moisture damage. Use a dish rack that has water collection so no water runs away on the counter, also remember to empty out the water and dry under the dish rack thoroughly. It’s very important that you make sure the dishes are completely dry before putting anything in cabinets/drawers.

Bathroom

A soft brush with a mild cleaning agent is the best way to keep bathrooms and toilets clean, without damaging enamel, tiles, or porcelain. Scouring agents scratch which makes cleaning more difficult. It’s important that the bathroom regularly gets to dry and air out. Waste from washbasins quickly becomes grease in drains. Hair and other waste easily get stuck, which is why it’s important not to throw waste in the drains. Drains are cleaned by regularly removing hair and other debris from the bottom valve. The apartment holder should take care of this themselves. Floor drains in bathrooms and shower rooms are equipped with a water trap, which functions as flood protection. To prevent flooding and bad odors, the water trap must be cleaned regularly. Lift the grate that covers the floor drain and wipe away hair and other debris that has stuck to the grate. Brush the drain clean and then rinse it with the hand shower. Put the grate back and check that there is water in the floor drain. If the water level drops, which it does if it hasn’t been used for a longer period, bad odors occur. Ammonia, scouring powder, strong cleaning agents, and scouring nylon should be avoided on all materials. Please see our instructional video on how to clean the water trap in the sink here:

Remember to wipe down the bathroom cabinet if it has become damp to avoid moisture damage. If you dry laundry in the apartment, you may only do this in the bathroom, and the bathroom door should also be left open. Unfortunately, we have seen on several occasions that floors and walls have become discolored in the bathroom due to hair dyeing, which can be very costly for the person who caused the damage.

For ventilation to work, it’s important that the vents in the kitchen and bathroom are not blocked, so clean thoroughly. You can test the function by holding a thin piece of toilet paper over the exhaust vent in the bathroom. If it stays in place with the help of the suction, the ventilation is working as it should. In many apartments there are also air intakes in windows, remember that these should be open and don’t cover them. It’s very important that you submit a fault report if the fan in the bathroom stops working.
