Cold in the apartment

How to maintain warmth in your apartment

  • Don’t place long curtains or furniture in front of radiators.
  • Check that the weather stripping around windows and balcony doors is intact.
  • Never leave windows slightly open. Keep ventilation hatches and vents open. The heating systems in our residences, together with ventilation, should create a good indoor climate of approximately 20.5 degrees during the day (with a variation of 0.5 degrees up or down). When checking indoor temperature, measurements should be taken one meter above the floor and in the middle of the room. To maintain a comfortable climate in your apartment, it’s good to follow some simple tips.

Covered radiators don’t work

If radiators are covered by furniture or long curtains, heat cannot spread into the room. At least 40 centimeters of free space is needed in front of the radiator for warm air to circulate and distribute throughout the room. The hot water in the radiator releases heat into the room. As the water releases energy, it cools down, meaning it’s warm at the top where hot water enters and cooler at the bottom where the return pipe is located. The entire radiator shouldn’t be warm. The colder it is outside, the warmer the upper part will be – a radiator is normally warmer at the top than at the bottom. If the heat supply in the room is sufficient, the radiator might even feel cold.

How do thermostats work?

Thermostats save energy by automatically sensing room temperature. You can of course choose to have a cooler room by turning the temperature scale clockwise until the desired temperature is reached. If the room receives “free energy” through sunlight, extra heaters, or if many light bulbs and electrical machines are running, the thermostat automatically stops the water supply to the radiator.

Ventilate to get fresh air

Open two windows and create a cross-draft for just a minute to improve air quality.

Cold drafts from windows and/or doors?

Check that the weather stripping around windows and doors is intact. If weather stripping is missing or damaged, submit a maintenance request either through the app or here.

Don’t close ventilation hatches and vents

An apartment building is designed to have proper air circulation. If the vents are completely closed, air exchange stops working.

Too warm in the apartment?

Turn down the heat by adjusting the thermostat on the radiator. After that, you can open the window for cross-ventilation for a minute. If you don’t notice the room getting cooler after a day or two and it continues to be too warm, contact our customer center and submit a maintenance request through the app or here.
