What should I do if the power stops working?

If your light doesn’t turn on when you flip the switch, either a fuse has blown or the bulb needs to be replaced. Here are some simple steps to fix the problem.

  • Start by troubleshooting. Is it just one light or outlet that’s not working, or is it the entire apartment? If several parts of the apartment have no power, a fuse has probably blown. You can find your fuses inside your apartment, usually in the electrical cabinet nearest to the front door. If a fuse has blown, you’ll see this because the circuit breaker has moved from its normal position. When you move the fuse back to its normal position, the power will return and your lights and other devices should work as they should. If a fuse blows frequently, you might have too many electronic devices connected at the same time.
  • If all electronics are working except for a specific light, you just need to replace the bulb. You are responsible for replacing light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and batteries in smoke detectors in the apartment. Make sure the power switch is turned off. Then unscrew the old bulb and note its marking and socket size. Get a new bulb with the same specifications, and screw it back in until it sits firmly in its socket.
