During December we organized Christmas events at several of our student housing locations. For many tenants, the holiday season can intensify feelings of loneliness, especially for those who are far from home or unable to travel. Through inclusive activities and meeting places, we aim to foster community, wellbeing, and a sense of belonging in our residences.
FOOD, CONNECTIONS AND A SAFE PRESENCE
In connection with the events, we met tenants in their everyday environment, gathered feedback, and answered questions, including those related to rental agreements and housing matters. Being present, listening, and remaining accessible is an important part of creating a safe and well-functioning living environment where tenants feel seen and included. During the activities, both student hosts and student ambassadors were present to welcome guests, contribute to a sense of safety, and help create a warm atmosphere.
One tenant described the significance in our follow-up survey:
“Community is important and appreciated by many who experience loneliness. Activities like this bring joy to everyday life and make you feel less alone.”
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY
On Christmas Eve, tenants gathered in Spånga for a Christmas dinner buffet in the common room at Campus Star. Many arrived with friends and expressed appreciation for having a Christmas celebration to attend. Student ambassador Chrysa was responsible for organizing the event and created a welcoming setting. The evening ended with karaoke, where laughter and conversations contributed to a clear sense of togetherness.
In Trollhättan, a shared Christmas evening was arranged with classic holiday food and sweets. Tenants prepared the meal together using purchased ingredients, creating natural opportunities to connect and fostering a strong sense of participation. Student host Daniel was present and contributed with both practical support and an engaging presence in the conversations throughout the evening.
In Göteborg, several activities were organized. At Campus Kajen, we served saffron buns and gingerbread cookies, which tenants described as a welcome and enjoyable break from everyday routines. At Campus Kristall, a Christmas event with a traditional holiday plate was arranged. The response highlighted how meaningful it was to gather together, especially for those who might otherwise have celebrated on their own.
In Malmö, we organized a Christmas lunch at Campus Oshöga. The event began with mulled wine served with almonds and raisins, followed by mingling and conversations before a catered Christmas plate was served. To ensure everyone could participate, both ham and turkey were offered along with vegetarian alternatives. Tenants particularly appreciated the table setting and decorations as an important part of the overall experience. The lunch concluded with rice porridge served with berry sauce, and those who wished were welcome to take some home. Student host Jessica attended and contributed to a warm and considerate atmosphere. Any leftover food was also shared with others passing by in Oxie and at the office.
SMALL GESTURES THAT SPREAD JOY
At locations where we were unable to arrange events, we instead left a small goodie bag at tenants’ doors. A simple greeting that can spread thoughtfulness and help create a sense of connection, even when people cannot gather in person.
PRESENCE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE
These activities show how meaningful it is to create opportunities for tenants to meet in simple and inclusive ways. The aim is to strengthen community and make it easier for people to feel at home where they live.
